The major part of this book concentrates on detailed descriptions of fuel-injection sy.stems and their components. The mechanical governors and control.systems for in-line fuel-injection pumps have been omitted to make way for new subjects. The descriptions ofthe.se governors can now be found in the “ Uie.sel In-line Fuel-injection Pump” publication from the Bosch “ Expert Know-How on Automotive Technology” Series. Compared with the 3rd Edition, the following subjects are new or have been updated and extended:

DIESEL-ENGINE MANAGEMENT

“My engine is still making enormous progress...” This quotation from Rudolf Uie.sel in 1895 still holds true today. Ever since the launch of the first in-line fuel-injection pumps in 1927, this progress has been significantly shaped by Bo.sch. Above all, improvements in diesel ftiel-injection technology have made possible favorable torque curves and high performance figures with simultaneously reduced fuel consumption. The introduction of the unit-injector and common-rail high-pressure fuel-injection systems represented another milestone in diesel fuel-injection technology and has made a significant contribution to the die.sel boom in pa.ssenger cars in Western Europe. Bo.sch’s latest development, which makes die.sel engines even quieter, more economical, cleaner and even more powerful, is the piezo- inline injector for the common-rail system.
Modern diesel engines, in conjunction with Bosch diesel fuel-injection systems, create the condi tions for improved fuel combustion. This results in fewer emissions: however, future exhaust-gas emissions standards - at least in larger-sized passenger cars - can no longer be met without ad ditional exhaust-gas treatment systems. The particulate filter, with which it is possible to drasti cally reduce particulate emissions, is gaining in importance. These developments in die.sel technology are now described in detail in this completely revi.sed and updated 4th Edition of the “Die.sel-Engine Management” reference book.

Compared with the 3rd Edition, the following subjects are new or have been updated and extended:
• History of the diesel engine
• Common-rail system
• Minimizing emi.ssions inside the engine
• Exhaust-gas treatment systems
• Electronic Diesel Control (EDC)
• Start-a.ssist systems
• Diagno.stics (On-Board Diagnosis)
With the.se extensions and revision.s, the 4th Edition of the “ Diesel-Engine Management” refer ence book gives the reader a comprehensive insight into today’s diesel fuel-injection technology.
